Rhythmic gymnast earns national colours and African silver
Discipline, resilience, and teamwork have propelled local Grade 10 learner Sinead de Wet onto the international rhythmic gymnastics stage.
Michael Mount Waldorf School learner Sinead de Wet has achieved a major milestone in her sporting career after earning Protea colours and representing South Africa in rhythmic gymnastics.
The Grade 10 learner qualified for both the African Championships and the World Championships following national trials held in Kempton Park in March. Her success marks a significant step forward after narrowly missing out on qualifying last year.
“It was a really surreal moment. Having experienced disappointment before, qualifying this time felt even more rewarding.”

She went on to compete at the African Championships in Pretoria, where the South African team delivered a strong performance to secure a silver medal, finishing behind Egypt.
Sinead’s journey in rhythmic gymnastics began at the age of six. Since then, she has committed herself fully to the sport, training six days a week for up to four hours a day.
Balancing her academic work with the demands of elite sport has been one of her biggest challenges. “Learning to balance school and training, and still finding time to rest, has been difficult.”
Despite this, her determination has paid off. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasised the importance of perseverance. “Sometimes not getting what you want the first time leads to even better opportunities later.”
Beyond her individual success, Sinead highlighted the value of teamwork.

“Being part of a group has been very special. It’s different from competing alone, and I have really appreciated having teammates by my side.”
As she prepares to represent South Africa at the World Championships in Germany in August, Sinead and her team are seeking financial support to cover travel and competition costs.
She encourages younger athletes to focus, not only on performance, but also on their environment. “Surround yourself with people who uplift you. That support system makes a big difference.”
