Feeling down? Mountain Jew at Theatre on the Square is the cure
Sandton’s Theatre on the Square is turning boring, cold evenings into hot, comedy nights as Nik Rabinowitz brings his hilarious one-man show, Mountain Jew, to Johannesburg audiences.
Do Johannesburg’s recent cold evenings have you stuck indoors?
Theatre on the Square is offering the perfect escape as South African comedian Nik Rabinowitz brings laughter and warmth through his one-man show, Mountain Jew.
The production treated a packed audience to an evening of laughter on May 27, as Rabinowitz blended humour with reflections on his upbringing, ancestry, and personal life.

Rabinowitz takes the audience on a deeply personal journey in Mountain Jew, unpacking his upbringing on the slopes of Constantiaberg, his Jewish heritage, and his everyday life.
“Mountain Jew is a show that’s really about my life, but also the life of my ancestors. How they came to South Africa from Eastern Europe, and also going back thousands of years, probably to my 25th great-grandfather.
“From growing up climbing trees, commentating on my own rugby games, and attending a Waldorf School, where I learned to crochet my feelings and divine the precise spiritual frequency of organic, fair-trade mohair.”

He added that the production carries a deeper message of accepting life as it is, beyond the humour. “This is it. You keep living your life like this is not it and think you’re going to get there one day. There’s nowhere to get to. What if you get there and there’s no there? That’s the message.
“We need to laugh in these times, so please come to Theatre on the Square and laugh with us. However, audiences below the age of 21 are not allowed. If you don’t get to come, find another way to laugh.”

Producer and owner of Theatre on the Square Daphne Kuhn said it’s always a joy to have Rabinowitz present one of his comedies at the theatre.
“He has that special magical quality. He takes the mickey out of everybody in South Africa, every nationality, whether it’s the people, the politics, aspects of our social life, or humanity. He is the most wonderful satirical comedian, and we are so proud to have him here.”

Audiences praised the show for its humour and honesty. Candice Robertson said: “I laughed throughout the show. I really enjoyed the show because it speaks about the realities of the life of Jewish people.”
Another audience member, Simphiwe Zwane, said: “This is the perfect winter night out. The theatre was packed and the energy there was unmatched. I do not regret coming here and, next time, I will bring my friends with me.”
The show will be staged at Theatre on the Square until June 14
