Bryanston Honey Badgers youth rugby club dreams big for the 2026 season

Following success at the inter-provincial tournament trails in 2025, the Bryanston Honey Badgers youth rugby club is aiming higher this year.

The Bryanston Honey Badgers youth rugby club is preparing for what could be its biggest season.

Training session for the 2026 season is already in full swing at Bryanston High School, where players gather twice a week to sharpen their skills ahead of the competitive fixtures starting at the end of June.

Club chairperson Anthony Losco said the club was found in 2017 for the development of rugby, giving youngsters in Bryanston as much chance of making it to provincial level competitions as possible. “The club’s had its ups and downs, being a small club. As of 2023, we were still very much a micro team. Last year, we grew our numbers. We are currently sitting on 200 and the intention is to grow up to about 400.

“We service as many schools in the area as possible. We’re always open to the schools sending their kids to our nice, friendly, and professional environment.”

He added that the Honey Badgers celebrated a milestone during the 2025 season, when several players were selected to attend the inter-provincial tournament (ITP) trials. “Last year, a lot of our boys got to go to the IPT trials, which is the club season’s inter-provincial competition. It was our first year of getting the boys to go through. What was really pleasing, was the fact that a lot of our boys in the younger groups went on in the school season and were very, very successful. We are looking forward to see what 2026 has got for us.”

Head team manager Aimee Willis-Dixon highlighted the club’s strong coaching structure and welcoming atmosphere for young athletes. “Our lessons are planned age appropriately. We work on skill development and fitness, and the kids are just having a great time.”

She encouraged families and aspiring rugby players to join the club, noting that registration remains open despite the season already beginning. “Why don’t you come along to Honey Badgers? We’ll be excited to welcome you. Our teams start as little as six-year-old upwards. Our season has started, but guess what? It’s not too late to join. Our first set of matches starts at the end of June.”
