Bryanston Resident fears his safety as Bryanston Drive streetlights remain out
Bryanston resident Paul Turner said streetlights outside his property have been out since March, despite repairs in February, prompting renewed intervention from City Power.
A Bryanston resident has raised concerns over persistent streetlight outages on Bryanston Drive, saying repeated failures have left the area dark for months, compromising the safety of residents.
Paul Turner said streetlights outside his property have been malfunctioning since February this year, despite previous repair efforts by City Power.
“We’ve had an issue with the street lights in this particular spot, for ever since February this year, although it’s also happened before. The lights go off for a while and it takes a long time for City Power to resolve it.”

According to Turner, he was in contact with a City Power official, Lesiba Monyamane, who identified himself as the manager responsible for streetlights at the Randburg service delivery centre.
“He did not give me a reference number, but he sent his team out to do the repairs. [The technical team] worked on it and the lights did, indeed, come back on for a few weeks, but they went off again around March. I have been following up with Lesiba, but there has been no further response.
“The street lights are a safety factor. All three outside my property are out now. I’d appreciate City Power getting a move on and sorting this problem out, because my safety is compromised.”
Responding to the resident’s concerns, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangenasaid there is currently no service request logged on its system for the streetlights in question by the resident. “The last recorded work undertaken at the location was completed on December 28, 2025.
“While residents indicated that repairs were undertaken in February 2026, these were carried out following an escalation linked to a previously existing reference number, rather than through a newly logged service request. As a result, no active query remained on the system following the restoration work.”

He added that it is important for customers and residents to log faults through City Power’s official reporting channels, and to obtain a reference number for every reported outage.
Addressing why the February repairs only appeared to resolve the issue temporarily, Mangena said technicians identified a cable fault affecting the streetlights.
“To restore supply as quickly as possible, a temporary solution was implemented by swapping electrical phases, which successfully restored the lights at the time.
However, this intervention was not a permanent repair to the underlying cable fault.
The recurrence of the outage suggests that further infrastructure-related issues may have developed thereafter, resulting in the streetlights becoming intermittent before failing again.”

Mangena added that following a recent media enquiry, the issue has been escalated for urgent attention and a technical team has been assigned to attend to the affected streetlights.
“Our technical team has scheduled repairs for June 10, to assess and address the fault affecting the streetlights on Bryanston Drive.
The successful restoration of the lights will depend on the nature and extent of the fault identified during the repair process.”
