Bryanston leak continues after failed Johannesburg Water repairs

The latest repair by Johannesburg Water on Bryanston Drive lasted less than a day, according to Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford, with thousands of litres of clean water continuing to be lost.

Thousands of litres of clean water are being wasted every day from a longstanding leak on Bryanston Drive, raising concerns about infrastructure maintenance and service delivery.

The leak, which has persisted for more than a year, according to Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford, continues to flow, despite multiple repair attempts by Johannesburg Water.

Sandton Chronicle visited the site with Shackleford on June 13. She described the situation as an example of the city’s ongoing struggle to prevent water losses amid growing pressure on municipal infrastructure. According to Shackleford, the most recent repair was carried out on June 5, but failed on the same day. “Unfortunately, this last repair happened on June 5 and has not held, as you can see. The problem is, this is huge amounts of clean water being wasted.

“Residents have reported it again, I’ve also escalated it through my urban inspector to Johannesburg Water, but, as of June 13, the team has not repaired the pipe, the water is still spilling.”

She added that she would continue pressing for action until the matter is resolved. “I am going to keep pushing to get it sorted and hopefully, within the next week, it will be resolved, but if residents still see issues like this, please, it’s vital that we keep reporting issues to the relevant authorities. We need to hold Johannesburg Water to account.”
