Winter donation drive warms hearts at Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre
As winter bites, a community-driven initiative is helping ensure no one faces the cold alone.
As temperatures continue to drop across Johannesburg, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Expat Chapter Johannesburg stepped up to provide much needed warmth to the vulnerable.
The group visited the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre in Marlboro Gardens on June 5 for a winter donation drive, providing blankets and beanies to those in need.
Thuthuzela was initially an orphanage that provided a place of safety for vulnerable children in the Alexandra community. Today, Thuthuzela runs a fully-fledged day-care centre, in addition to the continued running of the orphanage.

The initiative undertaken in collaboration with Visions of Joy, saw the donations of 57 handmade blankets and 100 beanies to beneficiaries.
Speaking about the motivation behind the initiative, ambassador Bushra Faisal of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Expat Chapter Johannesburg said, “The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Expat wing members truly believe in the power that the coming together of our diverse representatives brings.

“Their shared commitment and vision to bring warmth and joy to those in need created this collaborative effort to join hands with Visions of Joy to bring hope, support, and practical assistance to vulnerable communities.”
She added that as winter approached, the group recognised the need for warmth among the children, elderly individuals, and families supported by the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre.

“This initiative was an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and remind people that they are cared for. We are also grateful for the generous donation of beanies, as well as to everyone who contributed in any form to this drive.”
Visions of Joy project manager Rabiya Mohammad encouraged other organisations and individuals to support vulnerable communities in whatever way they can.
“Every act of kindness matters. Whether it is donating goods, contributing funds, volunteering your time, or sharing your skills, every contribution can help improve someone’s life,” Mohammad said.
