Buccleuch residents transform John Park into community hub
Market day initiative by local association aims to boost neighbourhood security and restore public spaces.
Buccleuch came alive on August 29 as residents gathered at John Park for a market day.
Hosted by the Buccleuch Residents and Ratepayers Association (BRA), the event brought local entrepreneurs, families and community members together for a day of shopping, entertainment and connection.

BRA director Deli Matsebula said the market was created to give local entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase and sell their products while getting to know other business owners in the area.
“There are a lot of entrepreneurs within Buccleuch and we just don’t know each other. This is an opportunity for people to expose themselves, sell what they have and market what they are doing,” said Matsebula.
The market featured fresh local produce, handmade crafts, gifts and activities for families. Children could enjoy a free jumping castle, while residents were also encouraged to bring their bicycles and pets, with dogs required to be kept on leashes.

Matsebula said the initiative also encourages residents to reclaim public spaces.
“A lot of our kids now don’t come out because of all the crime that we find, not only in Sandton and Buccleuch, but in South Africa as a whole,” she said.
She added that creating safe spaces and supporting local entrepreneurship were important steps towards strengthening the community.
Funds raised through the event will contribute towards BRA’s community initiatives, including pothole repairs and security measures such as cameras.

Matsebula said the association has seen positive changes in Buccleuch and believes residents have an important role to play in improving their neighbourhood.

“We’re taking control of what is ours. If you’re not going to do it, who’s going to do it for you?” she said.
The market is part of BRA’s broader plans to host community events throughout the year, including themed activities around Valentine’s Day, Easter and Halloween.
For Matsebula, however, the heart of the initiative is simple: bringing people together.
“Let’s just have fun. Come enjoy yourself. Bring your kids, bring your bikes and have fun. Bring the grannies, bring your enemies if you’ve got enemies,” she said.
