Five people died after a minibus taxi collided with a sedan and caught fire at the Old Pretoria Main Road and Maxwell Drive intersection on September 22.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said law enforcement personnel and emergency responders attended to the scene on the border of Waterfall, Woodmead, and Buccleuch.

“The accident involves a minibus taxi and a Mercedes-Benz sedan. Following the impact of the crash, the minibus taxi allegedly overturned and caught fire,” said Fihla, confirming five fatalities from the minibus taxi at the scene.

Emergency responders are working to confirm whether the occupants of the Mercedes-Benz sedan sustained any injuries.

Intersection closed following collision

The intersection has been closed in all directions, with major delays expected throughout Midrand and Waterfall during peak traffic hours. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

The N1 freeway can be accessed via Allandale Road to bypass the intersection, while northbound and southbound motorists traveling between Waterfall, Kyalami, and Centurion can divert via the R55. Motorists can also use the K101/Old Pretoria Road Bypass via Allandale Road or Le Roux Avenue to bypass the scene.

Fihla urged motorists to reduce speed, exercise caution on approach to diversions, and follow all instructions from law enforcement officers on the scene.
