Sandton residents join forces to clean up public spaces
Residents from several Sandton communities are being encouraged to work together to keep their neighbourhoods clean through the launch of the Tidy Town Initiative.
The community-driven initiative brings together residents and local organisations to improve the cleanliness, appearance and safety of streets, parks and other public spaces.

One of the organisers, Ziyaad Munshi, a Duxberry-area resident, said the initiative was intended to bring different communities and associations together to make a difference. “We have various community organisations and associations supporting us, and we hope this can grow into something bigger and more sustainable.”

The Bryanston River Club Community Forum, River Club Security Village, Sandton Islamic Association, Duxberry residents, and residents from the Morningside area support the initiative.
Volunteers gather at Coleraine Park
The launch took place on October 18, with volunteers meeting at Coleraine Park, at the corner of Coleraine and Ballyclare drives. Munshi said the broader aim is to encourage communities to take responsibility for their surroundings while supporting government efforts to improve public spaces.

“We know that the main thing is that we’re going to make one day into day one and that it is today, and we can make a big difference,” said Munshi.
The organisers hope the clean-up will become a sustainable community effort, with monthly clean-ups being considered.
