Malané Hofmeyr-Burger finds her voice through the flute
Collaborating with fellow musicians brings emotional depth and renewed joy to the stage for a passionate performer.
Music has always been central to flautist Malané Hofmeyr-Burger’s life, after growing up in a home filled with song.
That early exposure helped shape her relationship with music and the way she approaches performing today. For Hofmeyr-Burger, playing the flute is not simply about producing beautiful sounds; she sees it as another way of communicating emotions, telling stories, and connecting with listeners. “I communicate emotions and music and stories through the flute as if I am a singer,” she said.

Her appreciation for musical collaboration is also rooted in personal experience. She previously performed many of the pieces in the current programme alongside her mother, who was an opera singer. The experience made the music particularly meaningful to her, and she is delighted to have found another voice to share that musical connection with. “I performed most of these pieces with my mother, who was an opera singer, and I am so happy I found another wonderful voice in Ilze van Staden,” she said.
She also enjoys working alongside pianist Sonja van Zyl, describing chamber music with fellow musicians as one of the greatest joys of her profession. “Playing chamber music with fellow musicians is the best job on earth,” she said.

She considers herself fortunate to work in a profession that brings her happiness, particularly through the opportunity to share music with others. “I feel blessed to do a job that makes me happy,” she said.
