Ilze van Staden hits high notes in opera journey

A childhood fondness for choral singing leads a passionate performer to Pretoria's classic stages.

Ilze van Staden’s journey into the world of opera was not necessarily the career path she had initially imagined, but a childhood love for singing eventually opened doors she had not expected.

Having grown up singing in choirs and participating in Eisteddfods, Van Staden developed an early appreciation for music. Pursuing it professionally, however, was not an immediate decision.

She initially imagined becoming a child psychologist, but by the time she reached matric, she began considering music as a possible career. After school, she took a gap year to decide which musical direction to follow.

Having received both classical and contemporary training, she struggled to choose between the two. “I couldn’t decide which one. So, I actually decided on musical theatre. Then, by accident, I ended up at the opera department.”

That unexpected turn became the beginning of her opera journey. She credits her singing teacher, Honey Strappner, with helping her transition into the genre and preparing her for the demands of the industry.

Van Staden said her teachers played an important role in nurturing her talent, building her confidence, and giving her opportunities to perform.

After completing her studies, she found opportunities at Brooklyn Theatre, where she performed in several productions, including La Traviata.

For Van Staden, performing is ultimately about creating an emotional connection with an audience. “I just want to make the audience feel what I feel when I listen to music.”

As a soprano, she hopes to interpret every piece in a way that allows listeners to experience the emotions intended by the music.
