Bridge over troubled waters

Railing has again gone missing from a bridge in Ballyclare Drive, Bryanston raising safety concerns from council and motorists.

A BRIDGE in Ballyclare Drive, Bryanston has made headlines again, with sections of the metal railing having vanished despite residents’ and local council’s ongoing attempts to keep the railings intact.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said it was unclear what had become of the missing railing, but said he suspected it had been stolen to be sold as scrap metal, and that this was not the first time the bridge had been targeted by ‘metal thieves’.
He said the missing railing made the bridge unsafe for motorists.

According to Earp, there were other bridges in the area which had seen similar fates. He named a bridge in 12th Avenue Rivonia and one in Bryanston Drive as two other sites where metal railing often went missing.
“The council needs to pay attention to the condition of the bridges on an ongoing basis. They should also consider constructing the bridge railings from concrete and not metal,” he said.

The Chronicle was still awaiting comment from the Johannesburg Roads Agency at the time of going to press.
