Residents’ tree chopping concern
HURLINGHAM - Local environmental enthusiasts have expressed their concern over the maintenance of trees in the Sandton area by residents and local officials.
Candice Hendriksz recently notified the Chronicle about the cutting down of trees in open parks on William Nicol Drive, Sterling Road and Hamilton Road, Hurlingham.
Her complaint follows a recent news report (week ending 12 July) on residents’ protests over an uprooted tree in Linden Road, Strathavon, allegedly the result of Joburg Water construction work.
“I noticed that a tree had been freshly chopped down in the park,” said Hendriksz, “To my horror, it looked as though there were a team of about five men chopping up the tree and bagging the wood to sell it on the roadside. I was reluctant to approach the men because I was on my own.”
Hendriksz said the park was designated by City Parks as Hurlingham Park, however, she did not find the park listed on the official website.
“If they had been given permission to chop down the tree and sell it because the tree is a problem, then it’s one thing. However, if these guys are just randomly cutting down trees and selling them, it’s a problem. I’m sure it can’t be legal,” she added.
City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said the council did do pruning as routine to protect the environment and encourage growth. “City Parks will investigate the claims. It must be noted, however, that our officials always wear official City Parks overalls.”
She encouraged residents with similar concerns to contact the council with their questions and complaints so that such incidents could be recorded in the official logging system.
Hendriksz said the men hadn’t been wearing official City Parks overalls and that she had tried to contact 011-375-5555 to voice her concerns but no one had been able to help her.
