Litter in Sandton under scrutiny
SANDTON - Littering in the area around the Katherine Street bridge has escalated, as has general littering throughout the Sandton precinct.
This according to concerned residents who want Sandton to retain its pristine upper-class heritage.
“I have witnessed vagrants carrying plasticware and packets in their trolleys and believe they are responsible for the littering on the pavements outside the bridge,” said a resident, who didn’t want to be named.
Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart said he had received numerous complaints about the level of litter in his ward, specifically in the waterway nearby the bridge. Furthermore, he said vagrants in the area, allegedly littering and lighting fires, were a point of concern.
“I try to do waterway clean ups twice a year,” he said. “One for the waterway that runs under the Katherine Street bridge and one for the waterway along Dennis Road, Atholl.”
He said controlling vagrants in the area was ‘another story’. “The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and police need to do this and it can be difficult to set up. The last sweep for vagrants along the river was about 10 months ago when about 16 vagrants were arrested.”
