Seeing Sandton through different eyes
SANDTON - Instagram is a new creative outlet for Ricky Marima who has taken an interest in capturing the structure of buildings in Sandton.
His documentation of the area has appeared on the social network platform Instagram. Marima, a business developer enjoys the development, change and transition of the construction and buildings in Sandton and is attracted to the city, as it is “constantly changing its formation”.
His interest was piqued at the beginning of this year after exploring the social platform out of curiosity. He said he searched for other people documenting the city and also started following the people whose shots he admired, and learned from their processes. He is inspired by the different methods people used to turn a photo into a story.
When he picked up on the editing techniques, he began working with filters, and was introduced to a phone camera app called camera +. “It is a great app to take, share and edit photos, and I can play around with filters, adjustments and levels,” he said.
Marima explained there is no routine when it comes to editing a photo. When asked about the mood of his of his imagery, Marima said, “I am a creature of habit”. Marima is drawn to city spaces and cityscapes. “I have a history in property which is probably where it comes from, and I am a little shy with approaching people. Buildings won’t bother you,” he quipped.
His fascination with Sandton focuses on the spaces that occupy the area. “The traffic is also great if you are not driving as it provides a texture to Sandton,” said Marima.
He is always curious about where cars are going and what they are doing, he said.
“Sandton never quite settles. It is a zone constantly transitioning.” Marima is interested in the future of Sandton as more buildings go up.
He is uncertain whether the rapid growth will allow for all the cars on the road. He said the streets were not getting wider and the traffic was not slowing down.
