Ambitious vendor calls for support

JOBURG NORTH - If you’re a regular commuter on William Nicol Drive you would have encountered Homeless Talk vendor, Bernard Selabe, who is calling on residents to help him support his family.

The 28-year-old Selabe helps to sell the publication Homeless Talk, and lent his efforts to distributing the publication at the 702 Sun International CEO SleepOut which took place in June. He urged residents and commuters to buy a copy of the newspaper, as his portion of the sales go into a savings account which he will use to earn a certificate to work in construction.

Originally from the North West Province, Selabe moved to Johannesburg in 2012 in the hope of finding work in the construction industry. Prior to his move to Johannesburg, he worked on farms as a herder, earning R30 a day. He now lives along the Braamfontein Spruit with his younger brother.

Selabe said he has been trying to gain a certificate to operate machinery in construction, and earn enough money to support his family.

He has been a vendor of Homeless Talk since last year and said, “I’m hoping to get a qualification to get a very good job so I can send enough money home for my mother and father. I want to turn my life around.”

Selabe added that he wants to build a new home for his parents and start a small business to support his whole family. He has started a bank account to fund his aspirations to find better work and help his family.

He concluded by urging local residents to support his dream to assist his younger brother and family by purchasing a copy of Homeless Talk.
