Bryanston facility to offer the community adult skills training

SANDTON – Residents in the Bryanston area who need to brush-up on their computer skills can attend an adult education class.

A facility in Bryanston offers the community adult skills training to upskill those who need it.

The Knowledge Base is a Section 21 non-profit company built next to Bryandale Primary School that offers a variety of facilities.

Not only is it used as overflow space for the neighbouring school, but it also offers adult education classes which are focused on computer literacy.

According to Di Macdonald of the Knowledge Base centre, the core function of the centre is to provide educational facilities to the teachers and the children of Bryandale Primary.

“We had an existing building, but we realised there was a growing need and in January this year, we started construction and built new classrooms.”

She said the facility has several different classrooms, a hall, amphitheatre and boardrooms as well as a catering facility.

In terms of adult education which is focused on computer literacy, Macdonald said there is a growing need for the community who need to utilise computer technology.

She said the programmes are focused on basic beginner computer education and also Microsoft Office training. “The classes are open to anyone and there are people from 19 years old to seniors who attend the classes,” said Macdonald, who teaches the classes and said with beginners they start with the components that make up a computer, such as hardware and software.

The students write an exam and they receive a certificate which states they attended the course and the skills they have acquired. She said there is a need for computer education and many people are not computer literate and still work with pen and paper.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood said it is an exciting initiative by the Bryandale Primary School which adds to its teaching ability.

“It goes a long way to assist the adults in the area if they want to upskill themselves.”

He said he is delighted that the section opened up and it will add a lot to the area.
