Field bands bring hope

ILLOVO – Musicians competed for the title of Field Band National Champions at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium on 15 February.

Field Bands from across the country brought music to life at the national championships held at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium on 15 February.

Thirteen qualifying bands performed sounds of percussion, marimba, brass and steel drums accompanied by dance at the stadium.

CEO of the Field Band Foundation Nicolette du Plessis explained that the foundation began in 1997, offering a dynamic real-life incubator programme where members learn to master an art form they have a passion for.

“Through creative activities, we teach children between the ages of seven and 21 life skills including discipline, commitment, critical thinking, problem solving and musical skills,” said du Plessis.

Companies sponsor field bands in their areas of interest as part of their company’s social investment, also attracting funding for learners’ tertiary education in some cases.

Field band ambassador and music teacher Tshepo Tautshwane began playing the tuba as part of a field band in the Kagiso township on the West Rand when he was 16.

“I developed a love for music through the field band and kept myself busy at the after-school programmes. It was also an opportunity to travel, meet other bands and have fun,” said Tautshwane.

After completing school, Tautshwane joined the Field Band Academy and auditioned to study music at North West University. After completing his studies in music and teaching, Tautshwane began work as a music teacher at Nelson Mandela Primary School in the Free State.

“The field band taught me to tackle socio-economic issues and avoid getting involved with crime and substance abuse. Field Band Foundation teaches you to make the right choices and be responsible, while also offering employment opportunities,” said Tautshwane.

He spent his first three month’s salary purchasing instruments and began his own field band at Nelson Mandela Primary School. “This is my way of giving back to the community. Every time the MEC has events, they ask my band to perform,” he added.

The Cape Whalers Field Band took the title of national champions at this year’s event.
