Sandton’s very own crime scene investigator

SANDTON– The Sandton Chronicle chats to crime scene investigations warrant officer Rose-Lee Smith from the Sandton Police Station.

Warrant officer Rose-Lee Smith is doing it all. A former Survivor SA contestant she feels privileged to be working in the suburb of Sandton.

With a bachelor of arts in criminology, Smith always knew that this was what she wanted to do.

“I focus on the investigation of crime, it’s what I geared towards doing and I landed up doing it and it worked out perfectly,” she said.

She has been part of the force for about nine years and hopes to move up the ranks.

“This year I am working on getting my expert status where there is a couple of courses I need to attend. I want to become an expert in the field and my focus will be on fingerprints specifically. So yes that is one of my goals,” she said.

Uninspired by the American TV show ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’, Smith was got her inspiration in a different way.

“We actually got burgled and the lady who came to our house to do the fingerprints started chatting. I was like ‘Hey this is amazing and it’s exactly what I want to do.’ She put me in touch with the right people and the post was advertised a few months later. It’s quite interesting how things work out so amazing,” she said.

Family orientated and coming from a family of musicians it came as a surprise when Smith told her family what she wanted to do. “I come from a family of people involved a lot in the arts world industry. So when I told them my interests they were quite shocked but very supportive,” she said.

A loving mother, Smith loves what she does both inside and outside the station. She often plays chess and badminton for the Sandton Police station.

About being on Survivor SA last year, she learnt to appreciate the small things in life.

For expert tips and hints follow her Facebook page called Staying Safe in SA. “It’s really cool, I share tips from the different crime scenes and my experiences. All this exposure has allowed me to gain real life experiences and pass on the information,” said Smith.
