CHD Awareness Week: Learn the story of young Buccleuch heart hero

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness Week is celebrated each year from 7 to 14 February.
Buccleuch heart hero Ayaan Bhoopal (10) hopes that his story continues to create awareness and inspiration for others facing challenges.
Ayaan has struggled with health issues his entire life after being diagnosed with a complex heart and lung condition just six weeks after birth. He has undergone five open heart surgeries and is currently on 24-hour oxygen.
Ayaan’s mother Seshma Bhoopal said her son was currently doing well and was in isolation as a result of his high-risk cardiac and pulmonary condition.
“Although he does have daily health issues, he has learnt to manage this with the guidance and care of his medical team,” said Seshma.
He is currently registered at Impaq homeschooling and enjoys working on his online lessons and programmes. Ayaan is preparing to undergo cardiac catheterization at the end of February.
Paediatric cardiologist at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital Dr Jeffrey Harrisberg and his team will be involved in this cardiac investigation of Ayaan’s heart.
According to Harrisberg, the purpose of the cardiac catheterization is to try and occlude any unusual collateral vessels that have opened up over time causing Ayaan to become cyanosed.
Seshma said she hopes this procedure will allow Ayaan to become less dependent on oxygen and ultimately be relieved from severe headaches, leg pains and other issues.
“Ayaan is a very complicated patient who always poses unique and difficult health issues. His medical team does their best and I believe that Ayaan will overcome his health obstacles as he always does.
“Ayaan never fails to rise above any adversity and for this we are truly blessed with an amazing CHD hero. Ayaan is a daily inspiration in a multitude of ways.”
