Musician Bergie Fresh wants to motivate the youth to follow their dreams

SANDTON – Artist Bergie Fresh is using music to help the youth follow their dreams.

Starting from humble beginnings, musician Bergie Fresh would like to motivate the youth to follow their dreams with his latest campaign inspired by his remixed single Made by The Mess.

“The focus on the song is how we change our lives despite our own ‘mess’, be it poverty, drugs or even abuse,” Fresh said.

The idea for the song, which features popular musicians, Emtee, Lucas Raps, and Robot Boii, was born from his fans. “I received inspiring messages from fans about how this song motivates them to want to do better and make a change from the ‘mess they come from. They shared stories about their challenging backgrounds and how they now see a better future than the one they are currently living.”

Fresh added that the song’s addictive melody and inspiring lyrics relate to children from all walks of life. “Kids from both the hood [townships] and suburbs dealing with the traumas of life can relate to it because music has that ability to heal. It gives them a voice and avenue to feel their emotions.”

Music has always been Fresh’s passion. “I’ve always wanted to be involved in music. I took a break for a while and realised that I actually need money. I landed a job at Hard Rock Café in Sandton and it was so fitting because the setting is all about music! While I was there, I actually got to expand my creativity and gain a unique sound.”

There, he learned about a whole different genre, rock and roll history, and became a fan of music legend John Lennon. After working there for almost two years, Fresh got his big break on the music program Coke Studios where he recorded the theme song for the show.

“I took leave and then, eventually, I never went back, my manager understood because I was living out my dream. Everything went full circle because I actually went back for one of my first listening sessions. I get a lot of support from my peers there.”

Using music as his way to a better future, Fresh is currently working on his album and tour. He also intends on pushing his Made by the Mess campaign forward by upskilling the youth through music and rap lessons.

“We want to address the issue of youth deaths through suicide. Many are too afraid to reach out for fear of being laughed at or misunderstood. We want to create a safe space where they can speak more openly and reach out for help.”

Fresh believes musicians have a responsibility to try and address societal challenges. “We make music so they can listen to messages of hope that’s relatable to what they are dealing with but we also want to make a difference,” he concluded.
