Learners aim to make a long-term impact in the fight against crime.
Hyde Park High School’s Omphile Kgampe and Glenn Lubaya were recently invited to take part in the Junior Commissioner Initiative. The programme is aimed at involving more young people in the fight against crime.
The learners each prepared and presented speeches highlighting the challenges of crime that youth experience in the country. “They were judged by representatives of the police force and competed against several other schools in our area,” said the school’s Avril Wright.
“The project provides an opportunity to invest in young people and it is an empowerment tool which primarily intends to inculcate leadership, mentorship, moral and ethical values in the youth.”
The programme is also aimed at building resistance and resilience among young people to crime and violence affecting them in their communities.
Glenn made it to the next round of the programme after being recognised as one of the top four presenters.
“It is exciting that our learners were afforded this opportunity to express their views and suggestions with an audience who value their input. The principal Melanie Kallie wished Glenn Lubaya every success in the next round as he represents Hyde Park High School in this arena,” Wright concluded.
