Recklessness on social media may land you in jail – JMPD
JOBURG – Residents are urged to call the SAPS on 10111 or the JMPD on 011 375 5911 to report any suspicious behaviour or criminal activity.
It is important to always be aware of what you are sharing on social media as it can get you into serious trouble.
This is according to Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayn Minnaar, warning residents to refrain from sending voice notes, tweets or messages that may incite public violence.
“This is a criminal offence that is punishable by a fine and or imprisonment of up to three years.”
In the wake of the recent incidents of civil unrest across the city, every attempt is being made by police to track and trace any perpetrators.
Minnaar said that if anyone is aware of a person sharing such content, they should inform the police as soon as possible.
“We cannot and must not standby idle and allow criminal elements to cause havoc in the city,” he said.
Metro police remains on high alert, together with the South African Police Services, to restore order and make arrests.
“This is not the time for hoax calls and spreading fake news. The JMPD will follow up on tips of stolen goods so that these can be recovered”.
