Tips to manage your anxiety during stressful times

During times of uncertainty and panic, people might be feeling increased levels of anxiety and stress.
Common signs of stress include depression, sleep problems, tension and anxiety.
According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), if high levels of unwanted stress are not properly managed, your health and sense of well-being can suffer.
In an effort to offer support, Sadag shares the following tips to manage your anxiety and mental health.
- Access what is causing your stress
The first step to getting a handle on your stress is to figure out the root cause. Take a good look at your physical condition and daily activities, once you identify your stressors you can take step to reduce them.
- Seek social support
Spending time and/or interacting with family and friends is an important buffer against stress – it can be helpful to share your problems with people who care.
- Proactive thought management
What we think, how we think, and what we tell ourselves often determines how we feel and how well we can managing rising stress levels. You can learn to change thought patterns that produce stress.
- Exercise and eat a healthy diet
Exercising can help you blow off steam thereby reducing stress. A healthy diet – low sugar, caffeine and alcohol consumption – can promote health and reduce stress.
- Take a break from social media and the news
Taking a step back or even muting words which might be triggering or overwhelming on social media can make a significant difference.
- Get adequate sleep
A good night’s rest will allow you to tackle the day’s stress easier.
