HELENA VAN HEERDEN: I did not know that next month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have not checked for any abnormalities in my body.
The new month brings an informative insight into a serious topic which many might not be aware of, breast cancer and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
SECHABA MOTHIA: Yes, I did. I haven’t checked for any abnormality as of yet but I do know how to check for warning signs because my family has a bit of a history with cancer, especially breast cancer.
Our two journalists of Sandton Chronicle and Rosebank Killarney Gazette took the time to ask the residents from Sandton on two important questions:
TSHEPANG RAMMALA: As a matter of fact, I did know about it. I don’t regularly check at all. I have never done it before. My family has a history of cancer so I am always alert.ADIEN CARSON: Yeah I did. I haven’t at the minute, so I think maybe once or twice a year. Whenever I see something about it [breast cancer], I do check.
Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month? How often do you check yourself for any abnormalities in your body?
DINAH WILTERS: Yes, I am aware of that. I check for abnormalities in my body at least once a year. I go to my house doctor and I also check in with my gynaecologist from time to time.BHEKIM TLOU: Yes, I know. I don’t want to lie; I have not checked for any abnormalities in my body. It is an important awareness because a lot of people have passed from the disease.CHARLENE GOODMAN: Yes. I check every three months when I do the HIV test. I do not have any history of breast cancer in the family but I had a few friends [who do] and one of them sadly passed on because of it.MZWANDILE MKHWANAZI: Of course I know about it. Unfortunately, I have never checked for any signs of abnormalities. I thought it was something mainly affecting women. I know some men who get affected by breast cancer.
