Learning from the legends
BRYANSTON – Both coaches look forward to the next series of training clinics, a holiday camp in December.
It was a weekend of all things rugby as Springbok legends Robbi Kempson and Braam van Straaten hosted a series of training clinics for the community’s aspiring players and coaches.
The pair, which hold 58 Springbok caps between them, took to the rugby field at St Stithian’s College from October 15 to 17 to share their expertise in a series of training sessions which included kicking, attacking and forward play and scrums.
Kempson said, “An excellent weekend spent with passionate coaches and young men who are very willing to learn and appreciate the finer detail of coaching techniques.”
According to Van Straaten, coaches and players from as far as Bethlehem in the Free State participated in the clinics.
Van Straaten said ‘ability was born but talent was coached’. “Being ‘technically smart’ will give a player the ability to perform a skill under pressure at a high level.
“The understanding of the skill and the process one needs to follow to perfect it must make sense. Simplicity gives you intensity and accuracy in your execution.”
Both coaches look forward to the next series of training clinics at a holiday camp in December.
