Great Bryanston cake bake raises funds to help community

BRYANSTON – The end of October brought joy to the community of Bryanston as members of the Scouts group hosted their cake fundraising event.

Raising funds for individuals or an organisation has never been a smooth-sailing task.

The 1st Bryanston Scout Group hosted a bake-off in hopes to raise funds for a local charity and to show the community that children are more than capable. The fundraising was held at the Scout Hall in Bryanston on October 30.

Activities, which included cake tasting, auctioning of cakes, jumping castles and live performances, were in motion. The main event of the day was the judging of the baking treats made by Scouts, Cubs and adults who participate in the event.

All baking treats had the potential of winning the competition but only a few were selected by judges to be displayed on the podium. Participants such as Andrew Wilson and his older brother Mathew, each received awards for the baking treats. Matthew came first in the children’s bake-off competition and his brother came second.

Scout group leader, David Sand, who was a Scout during his younger days, was excited to see participants with their cakes at the bake-off event in Bryanston. “It has been a lovely turnout for the great Bryanston cake bake event. Even though it would have been nice to see a lot more people, I am happy to see all these people here today. I think we raised R8 000 for Scouts in Bryanston and that is certainly a blessing for us,” said Sand.

“I had the idea of making the cheesecake beforehand just to test how good it would be and it came out pretty well, so I decided to do it again for the competition. I was not expecting to win. Everything was last minute and I felt really grateful when they announced my cake was good,” concluded Mathew.
