It’s all in the wrist
BRAMLEY – President of the TBASA, Kiley Cassel, alongside her team and the Xtreme Bowling staff members, arranged three divisions for 32 individuals to play in.
It’s not every day that you get to witness a sizzling two-day tenpin bowling tournament with plenty of strikes.
The Tenpin Bowling Association of South Africa hosted its first bowling tournament of the year at Xtreme Bowling in Bramley from January 15 to 16.

President of the association, Kiley Cassel, together with her team and Xtreme Bowling staff members, arranged three divisions for 32 individuals to play in – gold, seniors and silver.
The silver division included handicapped and developing bowlers, the senior’s division was for players over the age of 50 and the gold division was for the top bowlers.

Mark Goosen, who has been a bowler since he was eight years old took the time to share some of his secrets of success. “People think that you just have to throw a ball down the middle,” he said. “It’s really more complex than that. You have to understand your lanes, there’s a thin layer of oil in each lane, it helps guide the ball in the direction that you want it to go to.
“You have different styles of bowling, you can throw the ball straight, you can back the ball up, you can curve it [hook] and you can even throw it with both hands. I guess the only secret I can share with you is that you should knock as many pins as possible.”

Co-owner of the bowling arena Charlene Smith said, “Hopefully this year we can pick up where we left off and start planning for our own leagues and tournament. Some of these players will be representing the country in Egypt on July 9, so it’s a serious sport.”
