Locals knit for good
MORNINGSIDE – The women continue to meet each morning to not only knit and enjoy a good cup of coffee but also reflect on how far the project has come.
These locals are making a difference in their community one square at a time.
Based at a residential complex in Morningside, the group of friends came together to share their love for knitting and crocheting during the lockdown.
As a result, the group has knitted and crocheted hundreds of colourful squares which are made into blankets of different variations and sizes for those in need.
According to Ruth Tarica, she and her friends came up with the idea for the blankets during the lockdown as they had lots of time to spare.
“We were so bored and did not really know what to do with our time so we came up with the idea to use our knitting to help those around us.”
Initially, the small project aided a number of the staff members at the residential complex but today, the project has extended further into the community.
Tarica added that it is wonderful to see the smile on people’s faces when they receive the brightly coloured blankets.
“Sometimes we [also] raffle the blankets off and the money raised is used to buy food which is then sent to various townships [in the area].”
The women continue to meet each morning to not only knit and enjoy a good cup of coffee but also reflect on how far the project has come.
