Risks, challenges and rewards of a Sandton police captain
Captain Thabo Shilubane shares his humble beginnings, ways of fighting crime in Sandton and his life lesson
As agreed by all the police officers stationed in Sandton, the prevention of various criminal activities in the area has proven to be possible through hard work, consistency and unity.
Captain Thabo Shilubane of the Sandton Police Station paints a perfect picture in describing obstacles that officers face.
When asked about these obstacles, Shilubane was quick to answer that the public often assumed that police officer were immune to making mistakes.
“It’s a shame that police officers get harsh criticism and backlash when doing their work. People do not understand that investigations tend to take time due to protocols and legislation. We do our utmost best in ensuring the safety of our community every single day,” said Shilubane.
Born in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, growing up Shilubane’s goal was to become a public prosecutor, and he attained a law degree at the University of Limpopo. “When I got my degree, I went to a lot of interviews and got rejected. During my hiatus and job hunting quest, I saw that the South African Police Service acknowledged my qualification and I then applied. I never looked back at my decision of becoming an officer and serving my community.”
His qualification landed him a role as a sergeant at the Bedfordview Police Station for a duration of 19 years. He later transferred to the Sandton Police Station where he currently assists in the department of firearms.
Shilubane shared a life lesson that he followed every day. “When working with people, they will help you climb a flight of stairs which will lead you to your success. On the quest of reaching your final steps, don’t forget those who helped you with your first steps. When you fall you will need them.”
Shilubane acknowledged that police officers would always need the assistance of the public, Community Police Forums and local security companies to reduce crime.
He concluded hijackings and house invasions have been common in the area and urged the community to report any suspicious behaviour on 08600 1011 (Crime Stop) or to the Sandton Police Station on 011 722 4200.
