Driven by her love for children, Warrant Officer Cynthia Segoa protects the community
Cynthia Segoa faced her toughest times as a police officer during the early stages of lockdown.
Warrant Officer Cynthia Segoa, of the Sandton Police Station, has always valued the lives of the people that find themselves at the station with a story to share.
Through her kindness and honesty, she has been able to help her community mainly with safety tips and crime awareness campaigns around Sandton. With her many years of experience, Segoa still finds herself wanting to do more for those that she serves.
Born in Zebediela [Limpopo], Segoa was one of many members in her family to work as a police official. She has served in the department of social crime prevention for more than 24 years, and knew this was the direction she would take after completing her training.
“Ironically, I do not like to handle any firearms. During my police training, I had to do the shooting course which was one of the scariest things that I’ve experienced. After that I made an easy decision to go for the social aspect of policing. My duty is to establish good relations with the community through communication and education.”
While discussing her most recent challenges as an officer, Segoa highlighted how the early stages of the lockdown affected her duty. “My operation primarily focuses on visiting schools, community centres and halls to inform them on crime and safety so one can image how everything just changed in a matter of seconds.
We had to quickly adapt to the new norm which meant being both a police officer and an unofficial official for the health department. I’ve learned to expect anything.”
Segoa stated that with the help from the community, crime rates in the area will drop drastically.
“I have always believed in honesty and unity. With that being said, my message to the community members situated around Sandton is to please assist us by reporting any suspicious criminal behaviour.
Through engagement, communication and the sharing of information, criminals will find it hard to take advantage of people in the area. Contact CrimeStop on 08600 10111 when reporting any criminal behaviour, Let us work together.”
