The kids are doing alright at the Snakes in the City season 8 launch

Cast members of Snakes in the City celebrate their latest season with the public

Members of the well-known National Geographic Wild programme, Snakes in the City, offered an experience of a lifetime to youngsters at an event in Kramerville on June 25.

National Geographic Wild invited young snake fanatics and parents to an afternoon filled with loads of fun, education on snakes and a segment of questions and answers.

The children were excited to meet their heroes in person and of course touch a couple of reptiles. The show, which premiered in 2014, follows professional snake handlers Simon Keys and Siouxsie Gillet, on their quest to safely remove snakes in residential areas around Durban to a better location.

The two members of the show announced that the programme would be airing its eighth season on July 6 with a surprise of having a new member, Mbali Mtshali, join the team. Mtshali was given a warm round of applause as she walked on stage to join her team.

“I love all things that are seen as weird in the presence of the public and this is a combination of weirdness and excitement from my side. I am grateful and humbled to be working with my heroes and I can’t wait for everyone to see the latest season,” said Mtshali.

The excitement of the attendees was intensified when Keys asked them if they would like to view the first episode of season eight with them, and it was an obvious ‘yes’ from the snake fanatics.

Attendee Maria Varfis said, “Biggest highlight of the day was seeing my children being fascinated and learning more about animals. It’s important to know how to react when you see a snake and who to contact. To remove fear, you have to play your role of being well informed.

“Before the event started, my daughter asked me if a person is kind to a snake, will it be kind back? I said if you respect them in their environment, they will be kind back.”
