A North Riding singer announces her single release date
An emerging local gospel singer details the passion behind her talent.
Local gospel singer Hope Kondo shares that she will be releasing her second single titled I am on the heart of God, on August 6.
Kondo was born into a vocally gifted family and raised in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. She decided to take her vocal talent seriously in October 2021 and released her first single titled Ndidzidziseyiwo, which means ‘teach me, Lord’, in Shona.
“I grew up in a Christian family and both of my parents were musicians. My dad is a box guitar player and my mom is an alto singer,” says Kondo.
She shared that she began singing at Sunday school, and then in primary school. She would perform a few songs for the church with her friends, not knowing what the future had in store for her. In high school, she was recruited into the church choir.
She emphasised that she had a very good alto. “In form three, I think that’s Grade 11, I joined the praise and worship team which had instruments. I started there as a backing vocalist then later promoted to a lead vocalist.”
Kondo said she never thought she would take music professionally as she believed that it would remain a hidden talent.
“My vision regarding music is to dominate the Zimbabwean gospel industry and then make my way through Africa and then be international. My overall vision is to grow from where I am right now.”
She added that only a few people knew about her music, like her church community, family members, friends and her subscribers on YouTube.
Kondo said that she would visit other churches to listen to their music. “If I hear that a gospel artist is coming to do a concert or a show, I make sure that I go because I want to learn one or two things from them.”
She mentioned the gospel artists that inspired her were Minister Michael Mahendere from Zimbabwe, Dr Benjamin Dube from South Africa, Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, known professionally as Sinach from Nigeria, and Tasha Cobbs from America.
Kondo shared that she was working toward uploading her music on other digital platforms such as Spotify.
