Community heeds Rotary Morningside’s call to help alleviate period poverty
With the help of the community, Rotary Club of Morningside hosted a successful sanitary pad drive which will see over 1 800 pads go to schoolgirls in need.
Rotary Club of Morningside is working towards alleviating period poverty by supporting the Save Our Schools (SOS) campaign.
Throughout the month of August, the local Rotary group is calling on the community to donate sanitary pads which could be dropped off in a box located in front of the Pick n Pay at Morningside Shopping Centre.

According to the Rotary’s Jane Royal, the campaign was initiated by the Catalyst Group of the RCoM. “Our September campaign aims to collect hygiene products for a men’s shelter, Tower of Life, in Mogale City. It was while planning for this collection, that one of the Catalyst members mentioned the ongoing need for sanitary pads for girls in the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Golden Harvest Centre.”

Royal added that the response to the SOS campaign was wonderful, with over 1 800 sanitary pads collected in under three weeks.
“We would like to sincerely thank the Morningside community for their continued generosity,” said Royal.

Residents and shoppers still interested in contributing to the campaign can do so via the permanent box situated in front of the Pick n Pay at Morningside Shopping Centre. “All donations are welcome – this month we are focusing on sanitary pads. However, any non-perishable items are appreciated and are distributed to the charities we support.”
