The best way to WineX about life!

Another year, another delicious WineX tasting event.

The Sandton Convention Centre served as the perfect host to Standard Bank’s WineX tasting event held from October 25 – 27.

Wine lovers from across Sandton perused stalls featuring a variety of wines, chocolates, bar snacks, and biltong. Some exhibitors represented newer wine estates and brands, while others carried legacies going all the way back to the late 1600s.

Upon arrival, each patron was given a glass to sample the wine offerings to their heart’s contentment.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes (who photographs the photographer?) a play on the latin translation- was a moment with Kelvin Van Wyk that was too good to miss out on.

The atmosphere was as refreshing as a chardonnay and as rewarding as a glass of the best shiraz at a journey’s end.

Explaining the process of making a good-quality, delicious wine, Meridian Wine Merchants Group CEO Gavin Dittmar said that the journey begins in the vineyards with the end goal in sight.

“You can’t make great wine with terrible fruits,” Dittmar elaborated. “Eventually, with the right viticulture, you get the perfect fruit. From that, you need to have the right skills and techniques to take that perfect fruit and make it into the perfect wine.”

Dittmar closed by emphasising the importance of having an end goal in sight when winemaking; the result is determined by the vision for the wine.

“Do you want a red wine, full body that’s going to age for a long time; or do you want a crisp, fresh white wine like your sauvignon blanc that’s going to be drank quite soon?” said Dittmar. “Depending on what outcome you want, that also determines when you harvest your fruit, and then how you treat it to make the wine into the ultimate expression of what you’re trying to achieve.”
