Holey and green Grosvenor Road to be repaired

An end seems in sight for the gaping excavation on Grosvenor Road in Bryanston East.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has finally shed light on remedying the section of Grosvenor Road in Bryanston East which has been an eye-sore since last year.

The site, shortly before the Westbourne Road and Belgrave Street interchange when coming from West Hertford Road, is growing into a pool of greenery.

Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford explained on February 26, that the hole was the result of a burst pipe that she and residents escalated to Johannesburg Water on October 6. JW showed up on October 8 to fix the burst, Shackleford said, and the hole had been there since then.

“It was a major burst; there were a few on that road,” said Shackleford.
“It’s been there for quite a while; it’s been reported and escalated by myself and my urban inspector Busisiwe Ndlovu; she and I were at the site on January 19.”

The official response from JW on February 14, was that a work order had been logged through JRA on January 27, as published by the Sandton Chronicle in the week ending February 23.

JRA’s response came from the office of the entity’s regional operations head of department Langeriwa Mthombeni on February 22.

“The road reinstatement is scheduled to be carried out by the JRA’s regional maintenance team on February 27,” Mthombeni said.

Mthombeni outlined the process of work orders being issued and completed between JRA and other city entity stakeholders.

“The JRA follows a wayleave process where entities like Joburg Water, City Power and other service providers of fibre network companies can obtain permission to excavate and work on the road reserve or pavement,” Mthombeni explained.
“The wayleave agreement will include the scope of work intended to be carried out, the location where the work will be done, the timeframe in which the work will take place, the infrastructure to be affected by this work, and the rules and regulations pertaining to the safety of road users, and other applicable details.

“Only when a wayleave has been issued by the JRA can the service provider carry out their work. Once the service provider has completed their work, a service fee must be paid to the JRA for the undertaking of reinstatements.”
