Homelessness: A tangible way to make a difference
Providing food to homeless individuals is a fundamental and impactful way to address the immediate needs of a vulnerable population.
In the heart of every compassionate society lies the commitment to address the basic needs of its most vulnerable members.
Homelessness is a persistent issue that affects individuals in South Africa, and one tangible way to make a positive impact is by providing food to those who are without shelter.
According to Paula Slier, the founder of Brics Global Television Network (BGTN), who recently gave out food parcels to the homeless in Sandton, their attitude towards social responsibility has always been impacted by optics.
“We look for the causes that will have the greatest and most immediate impact on affected communities; our inspiration to provide food to homeless individuals stems from a deeply rooted commitment to social responsibility.”
She added they believed in leveraging their platform to make a positive impact on communities globally.
“Witnessing the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness, we felt a profound sense of responsibility to contribute towards meeting their basic needs.”
Slier said food was just one of the pillars of BGTN care.
“Development cannot happen without basic needs being met. Our various BGTN Cares initiatives focus on active grassroots intervention. We identified a particular need here; in other places, people need water, safety, and access to services.”
She emphasised that homeless individuals often face various health challenges due to a lack of consistent and nutritious meals.
“By providing them with balanced and wholesome food, we contribute not only to their immediate well-being but also to their long-term health.”
She concluded that nutrient-rich meals could boost immune systems, improve overall health, and enhance individuals’ resilience as they navigate the hardships associated with homelessness.
