‘No more dumping here’ – ward councillor issues stern warning

Public service announcement from Bryanston Ward Councillor.

Ward 103 Councillor Lynda Shackleford has appealed to Region E community members to stop dumping their bulk waste at the Bryanston Ballyclare Drive Pikitup site for hawkers to sell at that intersection.

“I am pleading and begging the community and the surrounds, we have got people from Midrand, Randburg, Marlboro, Craighall and Fourways bringing their goods that they don’t want in their house and just dumping it on the pavement for these hawkers to sell,” Shackleford urged in Bryanston on March 2.

Shackleford emphasised why the hawkers and vagrants living and selling by the busy intersection was such a serious problem for the community.

“We have a massive issue there with drugs, alcohol, and people staying in open spaces illegally overnight. People have to drive past these illegal hawkers and dwellers when they are bathing naked, when they’re doing their business on the side of the road, and this is just uncalled for. “

Pikitup have now got a system that you phone them when you need to get rid of a fridge, a couch, bookcases, desks, Shackleford advised. She said all residents looking to offload bulk waste ought to simply phone Pikitup and book a vehicle.

“Within three days, they will come and collect it from your residence at no charge,” Shackleford encouraged. “. I have nothing against people being entrepreneurs, it is illegal to trade at an intersection. They’re going against every by-law. The problem is it’s causing a rolling effect for the residents, the children, the elderly, travelling past these hawkers who are now trying to make it a business.”

Shackleford concluded with a public service reminder to residents across the Johannesburg North region.

“I need to remind the public that dumping goods on the pavement is illegal dumping. We have now spoken to by-law management to look at how we fine residents who dump goods on the side of the road. Hopefully in the next few weeks we start getting this right.”
