Eastside Mavericks dominate hockey in Morningside

Teams continue vying for log positioning in the Johannesburg Hockey League.

The Johannesburg Hockey League continued into the weekend on February 24 and 25 at the Morningside Country Club with truly exhilarating matches being played.

The Eastside Mavericks men’s and women’s teams had an amazing showing over that weekend, showing up dominantly to win their respective games.

The men’s side faced off against the Jozi Warriors on Saturday, taking the game with a match-winning 6 – 0 lead at the final whistle. The Eastside Mavericks men’s team played a dominant advancing game throughout the match, yet the Jozi Warriors held their own where they could.

The Eastside Mavericks continued the pursuit for the top of the logs on February 25 when the women’s side faced off against the Central Samurais, who were in second place on the log before this match.

After a first half of no goals, things quickly intensified in the third quarter of the match when the Eastside Mavericks scored two goals, taking a 3-point lead a minute and 45 seconds into the quarter. The Samurais’ best chance was when the Central Samurais were able to close the score gap with a goal at 10:35 into the third half.

As the fierce match between both women’s hockey teams, with positioning on the logs at stake, the electricity was dense as spectators held their breath to see who would emerge victorious at the end of the game. The Eastside Mavericks won 5 – 4 against the Central Samurais.
