The Friends Field and Study bunnies get a recused by the Berario Bunnies

Locals are encouraged to support Berario Bunnies’ amazing ongoing efforts inside and outside of the Field and Study Park.

The good news for the Field and Study Park is that a handful of the resident bunnies survived a recent virus that swept through the population.

This was reported by Friends of the Field and Study Park (FOFS) and the Berario Bunnies.
Arthur Hammond, the chairperson of FOFS, said after the rabbit haemorrhagic disease had swept through the park, killing almost all of their furry friends, resident Dominique Rowberry lent a helping hand.
“Friends of the Field and Study are beyond grateful. Dominique sponsored many of the sterilisations herself and raised the funds for the sterilisation of the remaining bunnies that survived the virus,” said Hammond.

He added that Meahni Pieterse of Berario Bunnies organised the sterilisation of the remaining bunnies. “She and her team of dedicated volunteers combed the park every Sunday, gathering all the bunnies.”
Pieterse said they found a pair of tame white bunnies which had been dumped in the park and unfortunately, one of them was dead.
“Unlike the feral bunnies who are too stressed to eat in the bunny carriers, this tame bunny was glad to be contained; he was so hungry that once captured, he gorged himself on carrots and lettuce.
“Please do not dump your bunny pets; it is cruel and illegal. Domesticated bunnies who have relied on human feeding do not have the survival skills they need to defend themselves out in the open.”

Pieterse said there was a happy ending for the remaining bunnies.

“Twenty of the sterilised bunnies have been released into the care of the Montessori School, where they have food, shelter, and a beautiful, spacious playpen. The tame white bunny and a few other long-haired breeds needing regular grooming are being rehomed by Berario Bunnies.”

Hammond concluded that this rescue mission had provided the bunnies with the care they needed and aimed to prevent their natural breeding habits from creating another feral colony in their park.
