Second group of Sandton Dog Buddies graduates

The My Dog Buddy dog-walker training programme graduates second, larger group of dedicated dog buddies in Parkmore.

The My Dog Buddy dog-walker training platform graduated their second group of ‘dog-buddies’ at Field and Study Park on May 4.

For this latest graduation ceremony, My Dog Buddy brand owner Lebohang Sekoto arranged for a short, special presentation.

A handful of graduating buddies voluntarily exhibited the skills which they gained through the dog-walker training programme.

Graduating dog walker Nerrisa Mariapane confidently took up the mantle to show what she had learned, introducing herself to two mini-dachshunds called Sprinkles and Coco. Mariapane was soon striding along the lawns with the two 44-year-old dogs (99 in dog years), a dog walker with two canine pensioners on long leads.

“This programme was an opportunity for me to bond with dogs, and show them the love which they are deserving of,” Mariapane said, reflecting on what led her to choosing to become a dog walker. “I’ve never had a dog, or a close bond with them, as a kid; mental heath-wise, this is beneficial for me, like free therapy.”

Fellow graduate Nkhensani Mapokgole, wanting in on the action, joined the trio on their short exhibition walk. She shared her own reason for wanting to learn how to walk and handle dogs.

“I joined this opportunity to know more about dogs’ behaviour, as well as how to provide dogs with the proper care,” Mapokgole said.

The third volunteer exhibitor had the toughest challenge of the day in separating Calypso the golden retriever from his owner, and lifelong best friend. Dog walker graduate Derick Boshielo showed resilience, guiding Calypso with a firm hand where necessary.

“The experience inspired me to grow firmer as a handler,” Boshielo reported. “Calypso was friendly, but he didn’t want to pay attention to the walk – he wanted to return to his owner.”

Programme founder Sekoto expressed how proud she was of the larger, second cohort of dog walkers trained through her innovation of the platform.

“As dog walkers and handlers, you hold more than just a leash; you hold the trust of the families who believe in your capability to care for an important member of their household,” Sekoto reminded the graduating class of May. “You are not only walking dogs – you are enhancing lives, providing peace of mind, and creating joyful experiences.\

Nkhensani Mapokgole experiences love at first sight with Sprinkles and Coco, the 99-year-old (in dog years) pensioner dachshunds.

“As we move forward from today, remember that each step you take with a furry companion by your side reflects the trust and professionalism fostered through your training here at My Dog Buddy,” Sekoto concluded. “Here’s to many more walks, wags, and wonderful moments ahead!”
