Lifestyle club in Morningside hosts another hockey banger

Country club in Morningside continues to host exciting hockey games, as the interprovincial league revs up into the next gear.

It was a clash of the fillies when Pretoria team Northern Fillies took on Johannesburg East’s Eastern Fillies at the Morningside Country Club on May 4.

Easterns led the early forward charges in the first quarter of the match, building up strong attacks which were met by a tidal wave of defence from Northerns.

Both teams were tied at the close of the first quarter, with Northern taking the early lead midway into the second quarter.

Easterns intensified their hunger for an equaliser and this they did in the first quarter of the game’s second half.

Eastern Fillies’ Michelle Kitching and Northern Fillies’ Marian Nyako-Lartey vie for the ball.

Northerns were undeterred, scoring a second goal to lead 2–1 towards the close of the third quarter. Northerns managed to hold onto the win albeit after a late surge by Easterns.

“The ladies ran very hard, till the very last whistle,” spectator Gary Marais commented at the end of the match. “We saw two great sides going at each other the whole game, and some very good hockey was played as well, which is also important to remember.”
