Vox Pops: How I came to be here, cleaning the Zandfontein Spruit

A river clean-up along the Zandfontein Spruit in Sandton reveals ned for urgent water education targeted at informal settlements erected along water bodies in Johannesburg North.

Some of Bubele Africa’s partners were asked what moved them to get involved with the NPO’s drive to clean up the Zandfontein Spruit. Here is what they had to say…

Nicolas Steensma: I like giving back. I founded the CanRun club, which was inspired by Bubele Africa.
I tend to run through Sandton quite often, and I picked up that there are a lot of homeless people here. I wanted to find a way to merge my passion with giving back to the community, and I figured what better way than to have a run club that operates as a collection point for cans [of food] to give to those homeless people.
Thabiso Tshabalala: I met the organiser as a part of the Mr South Africa pageant. When he told me what they were doing, I felt it was very impactful for us as a society – because we all drink from the same water. To see the water in this state is shocking when you consider that at the end of the day, as dirty as it looks, this is the water we’ll drink if we don’t take care of our rivers.
