IIE’s Varsity College Sandton students complete Blanchard Institute’s Student Self-Leadership programme

This initiative highlights Varsity College Sandton’s commitment to nurturing future leaders who will make a difference both on campus and in their broader communities.

Three student leaders from The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton have completed the Blanchard Institute’s six-week Student Self-Leadership programme, designed to equip them with skills to inspire and lead within their communities.

Among the participants were Itumeleng Mononyane, a second-year Bachelor of Accounting student and Social Committee Volunteer; Lebogang Pooe, a third-year Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Application Development student and Chairperson of the Social Committee and VC Voice; and Kayla Jameson, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student and Social Committee Member.

According to Anto Kagisho, the communications person at the campus, they were part of a group of 17 student leaders selected from the Sandton campus.

“The programme focused on personal growth and leadership fundamentals, covering topics such as goal-setting, effective communication, confidence-building, and self-assessment.”

She added through interactive sessions and a dedicated handbook, students were encouraged to explore their unique leadership styles and develop strategies to positively impact those around them.

Reflecting on the experience, Mononyane said, “Learning the core principles of self-leadership provided a fresh perspective on my experiences.”

Mononyane elaborated that concepts such as goal setting and self-assessment made him consider how he could have approached past situations differently for better outcomes.

“While I have been recognised as a good leader before, this course reinforced the importance of taking charge of my development and managing challenges with confidence.”
