New bridge in works to prevent flooding risks in Buccleuch
As flooding remains a concern at the lower bridge, JRA advises caution when using the bridge during rainy weather as the long-term solution is in progress.

For the past few years, motorists in the Buccleuch area expressed their concerns about the safety of the lower bridge, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Xolani Cele, a resident, highlighted what he has observed about the lower bridge issue this year.

“I haven’t heard anyone talk about the bridge this year because since the upper bridge was made bigger, there have been two major rains, but with limited impact on the lower bridge.”
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) acknowledged these concerns and was actively addressing the problem.
According to Kwazi Mcetywa, the head of infrastructure development at JRA, the agency recently implemented an interim solution by resurfacing the lower bridge to mitigate the impact of flooding on the bridge, allowing vehicles to use it more safely.
“However, a long-term resolution is already in the works,” said Mcetywa. “The designs for a new bridge are currently undergoing the environmental approval process. This structure will be elevated to prevent the flooding risks that have historically affected the lower bridge.”
Despite these efforts, the heavy rainfall during the summer months continues to pose a risk to motorists.

Mcetywa added motorists should exercise extreme caution when crossing the lower bridge during rainy weather.
“Flooding at the bridge occurs sporadically, and while we are working towards a permanent solution, drivers should always be cautious during periods of heavy rainfall.”
He said JRA had provided interim measures for motorists’ safety.
“When flooding occurs, barriers and sandbags are deployed to prevent drivers from attempting to cross the low-lying structure. The agency is also monitoring water levels in real-time.”
Mcetywa explained that because flooding could occur unexpectedly, it was difficult to predict exactly when it would happen.
“While the JRA’s interim measures are in place, the long-term solution will be to construct a bridge set to be built at a higher elevation to avoid the floodwaters that have become a recurring hazard. This new bridge is expected to significantly improve the safety of the area, especially during the rainy season.”
The agency also plans to upgrade the drainage systems around the lower bridge, further reducing the impact of flooding on the road.
Mcetywa assured the public that the JRA remained committed to keeping them informed.
“We will issue media statements as the construction of the new bridge progresses, and we urge motorists to be vigilant during periods of heavy rain. While the flooding is sporadic, we want the public to be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions.”
