South African water polo sensation and dedicated student, Shakira January, is set to captain her national team at the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
South Africa’s rising water polo star, Shakira January, has been named captain of the South African National Women’s team for the 22nd World Aquatics Championships, taking place in Singapore from July 11 to August 3, 2025.
An accomplished athlete and dedicated student, January’s selection is a testament to her leadership, perseverance, and the respect she has earned within the sport.

“Being chosen to represent my country is not just an honour but a responsibility I hold close to my heart. I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and will give everything I have to make my team and South Africa proud,” January said.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology at the IIE Varsity College Sandton, January exemplifies the modern student-athlete.
