Billboard visually pollutes Bryanston
Another allegedly illegal billboard has been erected in plain sight, despite a previous intervention.
A large billboard has appeared at the corner of Winnie Mandela Drive and Ballyclare Drive, raising serious concerns among residents and local stakeholders.
The structure was previously halted in November 2024, when the contractor failed to produce the required approvals from the City of Johannesburg’s Planning Department.

At the time, the contractor was reportedly warned that he would face arrest and have his vehicle impounded if he proceeded.
Despite this, the billboard has now been fully erected, suggesting the installation was completed quietly while attention was diverted.
It remains unclear whether the billboard has since been granted formal approval or if it remains illegal.
This incident has sparked renewed frustration over the city’s apparent inability, or unwillingness, to curb illegal outdoor advertising, especially in high-traffic areas where such structures have a direct impact on visual pollution and public safety.
In response, we have sent a formal inquiry to the City of Johannesburg requesting clarity on whether the billboard was approved, who the applicant is, and what enforcement actions, if any, were taken.
We will provide an update once the city responds to our questions.
