Johannesburg authorities clamp down on festive street bashes as city enforces tough safety measures

Unlicensed street parties are off the festive agenda in Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg has issued a firm warning ahead of the festive season: Street bashes and unregulated outdoor parties will not be allowed anywhere in the metro.

Authorities say the blanket ban is in place for the entire holiday period, with law enforcement teams instructed to close down any non-compliant events immediately.

According to the city’s MMC for Safety and Security Mgcini Tshwaku, the clampdown is aimed at curbing public disorder, noise disruptions, crime, and safety risks, often linked to uncontrolled street celebrations.

Officials added that the city wants residents to enjoy the festive season responsibly, but within the confines of the law.

Events that do not meet the required legal and safety standards will not only be halted; organisers will also face serious consequences.
