Sandown and Strathavon hit by sudden water disruption after pipe burst

A burst water pipe, discovered late on Saturday night, has left parts of Sandown and Strathavon facing low pressure or no water, with Johannesburg Water unable to confirm when supply will be restored.

Residents in Sandown and Strathavon are facing an unexpected water interruption, after Johannesburg Water isolated supply following the discovery of a pipe burst on the evening of December 20.

The incident was confirmed at around 21:15, during excavation work on Gayre Avenue in Sandown.

While attending to the site, technicians discovered that the burst was located beneath another tree in the same area, prompting immediate action to shut off the water to prevent further damage.

As a result, households and businesses in affected areas may experience significantly reduced water pressure or be without supply altogether.

Johannesburg Water said its team is still working on the issue, and investigations are underway to assess the full extent of the damage.

At this stage, there is no estimated time for restoration, and residents have been urged to remain patient while repair work continues.

Johannesburg Water has assured the public that further updates will be shared as soon as more information is available.

The utility apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that communication channels will remain open until the situation is resolved.
