JMPD makes more than 200 arrests in Johannesburg for drunk driving during festive crackdown
JMPD warns that the crackdown is far from over, urging drivers to stay sober or face arrest.
Johannesburg motorists are being warned to think twice before getting behind the wheel after drinking, as more than 200 drivers were arrested for drunk driving in just one week.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), intensified festive-season operations, between December 15 and 21, resulted in 227 motorists being taken into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers carried out high-visibility roadblocks, roving patrols, and targeted enforcement operations across the city.
JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca said the numbers reflect a worrying disregard for road safety, at a time when accidents and fatalities traditionally spike. “We are seeing very high numbers of accidents on our roads, and more people are being killed. Each arrest made represents a potential tragedy averted and a commitment to protecting innocent residents and visitors. We will build a force feared by transgressors, but trusted by the people.”
The JMPD added that its festive safety campaign will continue throughout the holiday period, with officers deployed around the clock on major routes and known hotspots.

The department has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving, warning that anyone caught will be arrested.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, use e-hailing or public transport, and obey the rules of the road.
Authorities are appealing to residents to help ensure the festive season does not end in tragedy.
The message from JMPD is blunt: If you drink and drive, expect to be stopped, tested, and arrested.
